emusic Review of the Day

World's Fair Label Group reports:

"Review below.  They gave it 4 out of 5 stars!

'Just as every rock movement needs its Pearl Jam (to act as crossover populists) and its Nirvana (to be experimental and tragic), so too does it need its Stone Temple Pilots (to shoulder all the shit for the bigger acts). In the great rock reinvention of the early 21st century that saw the breakout of the Strokes and White Stripes, a quartet from Australia with a quirky, manic frontman scored a hit with a screeching post-punk track called "Get Free" and were immediately dismissed as the first great wannabes of the new generation. Never mind that most of the Vines' debut Highly Evolved was made up of trippy Britpop dirges and wasn't nearly as horrible as everybody remembers — frontman Craig Nicholls was immediately immortalized as the new Gavin Rossdale.

'But that was 2001. In the ensuing eight years, Nicholls became more famous for alienating band members, kicking photographers and going through treatment for Asperger Syndrome than for having a rock band that released two perfectly acceptable nu-garage records in 2004's Winning Days and 2006's Vision Valley. Now free from a major label, the Vines' Melodia reverts back to the balance struck on their debut: psych-infused space rock with a bit of buzzsaw hardcore thrown in for good measure. When it hits, it hits hard, as on the punchy drop-D throwback "Get Out" and the jackhammering "Scream." Not all of the ballads on Melodia work, though "She Is Gone" is a deeply affecting strum-and-cry. "Manger" has a Zeppelin-biting verse that dives out of the way for the sake of a soaring chorus that channels Parklife-era Blur. In fact, Nicholls and Damon Albarn have a lot in common: the lazy snarl, the toxic perspective and an interest in slamming genres together.

'That's not to say all of Nicholls aping works out for him, as single "He's a Rocker" is something the Von Bondies would dismiss as too crass. But just as Stone Temple Pilots accidentally made one of the best albums of the grunge era (Purple), Nicholls gives the Vines the potential to unleash greatness some day. Melodia is not that record, but it's a good start. ' "

The Vines Release New Album, Melodia, on March 24 in US

These are tight, tuneful songs – loud and fast rock & roll, pure and simple, the kind that propelled the Vines into international acclaim. Melodia is a record by a band who’ve seen a lot since they broke into the public’s consciousness, and it’s a record that reflects those changes without forgetting what won them so many fans in the first place. The songs on Melodia ring as a testament to the band’s talent and focus, and most of all, their dedication to making the kind of rock & roll that sticks to your ribs and stays in your head long past the actual notes have stopped ringing.

The Vines announce cancelled shows

It is with a great deal of regret that The Vines today announced that they have cancelled all of their Australian festival appearances -  Homebake, Pyramid Rock and Big Day Out - and their forthcoming Japanese tour scheduled for  late November .

Craig Nicholls’ mental condition has deteriorated extremely rapidly over the past month to the point where he requires immediate help over an extended period of time.

Craig’s fellow band members Hamish Rosser, Ryan Griffiths and Brad Heald are all extremely saddened by this turn of events and wish to extend their heartfelt thanks to all the fans, friends and family who have shown faith in the band since their successful return to the live stage in 2006.

"On behalf of The Vines we would like to extend our sincerest apologies to those of you who have bought tickets to see us perform and will not get to do so” said Hamish. “We are all absolutely devastated that we've been forced to cancel all upcoming shows as there's nothing we love more than playing on stage before an enthusiastic audience. We ask for your understanding in this situation”

The band and management wish to extend a massive thanks to all of the promoters who showed such faith in the band by adding them to their bills, and to thank each and every one of them for their sensitivity and understanding of the band’s situation.

Big Day Out Co-Ordinator Sahara Herald Shepherd said

“The entire Big Day Out family is deeply saddened by the news that Craig Nicholls and his band The Vines will not be joining us on our 2009 summer tour. The Vines performances at the 2007 Big Day Out were nothing short of dazzling and they will be greatly missed. That said, we recognise that now is the time for Craig to focus on re-gaining his health. Our thoughts and best wishes are with him and his family at this time. “

The band and Craig’s family would like to ask that sensitivity be shown at a difficult time and ask that this statement be taken as their only comment on this matter.

Thankyou

The Vines

IMPORTANT INFO FOR FANS re: PERTH CANCELLED SHOW

For everyone in Perth who had to suffer the disappointment of Saturday night’s Rosemount show being cancelled, we sincerely apologise, and also apologise for the extremely late notice regarding the cancellation. The band are genuinely gutted that the show didn’t happen and feel terrible that they have disappointed their  WA fans. Unfortunately Craig was not able to fly from Adelaide to Perth due to a serious recurrence of his flight related anxiety. For those of you familiar with his condition and history, we hope you will understand that continuing the flight was not an option.

We hope to make it up to you all in the future, and if you haven’t already been informed, of course your ticket can be refunded from point of purchase.

THE VINES ANNOUNCE AUSTRALIAN “MELODIA” TOUR FOR OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2008

Following on from their incredible recent performances at this year’s Fuji Rock and Splendour In The Grass festivals, THE VINES are pleased to announce that they will be embarking upon their first full length national album tour in over four years this coming October and November in support of their brand new long-player, “Melodia”.

After their many well documented trials and tribulations, no one really had the right to expect to find The Vines in such rude health in 2008, but with the release of “Melodia”, the band have come full circle, recording their best album since “Highly Evolved”  and playing the finest live shows of their career. Anyone who has witnessed the bands’ incendiary sets at Splendour, Homebake or Big Day Out over the past two years will attest to the fact that as a live force they are now nigh on unstoppable.

“We can’t wait to get on stage and do it properly for all of our fans ” says singer Craig Nicholls “We feel really good about the live show at the moment, and now with four albums to pick the set from its going to be great to change the show a little bit every night. Let US entertain YOU.

With this being the band’s first full national tour since 2004, and the band in the best health and live form of their career, expect tickets for The Vines to sell out immediately.
